I grew up in the woods of northern Wisconsin, near the south shore of Lake Superior. Much of my youth was spent in nature, wandering and exploring the fields and ravines and forests around my family’s little farm, so when I began looking for employment as a teenager I didn’t want, for goodness sake, to take an inside job. So I did some maintenance work for a private inholding at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and was the host at a nearby campground.
My work since then has remained exposed to the elements, in wild places, and that is why I like natural building. There is some wildness in it. I get to work directly with the earth, creating something functional and beautiful with it, and always working within nature’s prudent and sustainable limits.
In 2004 I founded In The Round Natural Building and have been building and studying building and design since then. My main goal within natural building is to help people build their own home, with their own hands, with local materials, and with as little debt as possible. And, of course, to have fun doing it, because the only way people will change is if they see other people having more fun than they are having.
